Road Test Information

To book your Class 1, 2 or 3 Road Test you can go online through the Alberta Road Test Scheduler System (ARTS).
If you don’t have a credit card or can’t book online then you must come into Cochrane Registries to reserve and pay for your road test.
If you book your road test online, please read all the terms and conditions carefully.
It is required by law that you provide certain documentation to your scheduled road test.
The vehicle that you must provide to perform your class 5 or class 6 motorcycle road test must be in adequate condition, with certain equipment that is mandatory for your road test. For example, working signal lights and brake lights. Please review the complete list of vehicle requirements on your Road Test Confirmation Sheet.
Only you and the examiner are allowed in the vehicle. No other passengers or pets are allowed. The only exception occurs when the examiner is accompanied by a government official in the course of being monitored.
Examiners cannot be requested.

Your vehicle must have the following and be in acceptable working condition:
- Enough fuel for the road test; Headlights, Brake Lights and Signal Lights; Horn; Brakes/Park Brake; Speedometer; Tires; Vehicle seats/seat belts; Unobstructed Windshield/Wiper; Mirrors; Exhaust system/muffler; Driver and Passenger Doors. Please ensure the interior of the vehicle is reasonably clean. Please review the complete list of vehicle requirements on your Road Test Confirmation Sheet.
- Proof of valid registration and insurance
MUST be in the same name (if company vehicle MUST have a letter of authorization; if the vehicle is a rental vehicle your name MUST show on the rental agreement; if the vehicle has Dealer plates you must be an employee of the dealership with a letter of authorization). - If you are taking a Class 6 (motorcycle) Test please bring your cell phone and earbuds with you.
- All condition codes that appear on your driver’s license must be met to be taken out on the test.
- Only a VALID Alberta Operator’s License (Alberta Driver’s License or Alberta Learner’s License) will be accepted. The only exception is for suspended Alberta drivers.
- If you do not meet all the prerequisites, or are not eligible (knowledge test, Alberta Registries approved medical, sufficient driving history), for the class of license you are testing for, the examiner will not take you out for your road test. A new Road Test permit will have to be purchased.
Road Test Permit Cancellation / No Show Policy:
A minimum of 2 day’s notice is required to reschedule your exam you may reschedule your appointment up to 2 times. If you cancel your road test with more than 2 day’s notice you will receive a full refund. If there is less than 2 day’s’ notice given there is no refund. Road Tests and Money are non-transferable. To re-book your Road Test you can must contact Cochrane Registries directly and speak with an agent or attend our office and we will reschedule your appointment for you. Should you fail to attend your road test appointment at the scheduled time, your fees will be forfeited. A new Road Test will have to be purchased.

Failure to comply with any of the above conditions will result in a forfeiture of any fees paid.

Please be sure you are eligible, and contact us if you are unsure. When you are providing your own vehicle, please make sure that it is in proper working condition as vehicles that do not pass a basic safety check will not be permitted for testing purposes.
When the time comes for you to take your class 5 GDL (basic) road test, show up 30 minutes early so that you can check in with one of our registry agents. Please ensure that you have all of the necessary items with you so that you do not run into a problem.
Here is a more detailed list of what you should bring:
- Valid Class 7 Alberta’s Learners License
- Valid Insurance & Registration for the vehicle that you are providing for your road test
- Corrective lenses if you need them for driving.
- Medical, if required
- Parent or Legal Guardian
After the test, the road is yours, assuming you passed. You will be able to drive where you want in your own vehicle, all on your own. Failing your class 5 road test in Calgary may not set you free, but taking your road test at Cochrane Registries might, just remember to brush up on your driving skills so that you know your stuff, increasing your chances of a successful test.
